Seventh and Eight graders are in the middle of studying the wonderful world of Japan. Their final unit project is 3 projects all rolled into one, starting with paper marbling. Suminagahi is the ancient Japanese art of paper marbling which is very beautiful but also very finicky. In the classroom we opted to use shaving cream marbling to recreate the look of the traditional Japanese art. Messy, smelly but always successful and beautiful! If you loved it and want to give it a try at home I have posted the step by step below and also on our YouTube channel! You can use any kind of paint you have laying around. Just for fun, if you have a lot of nail polish laying around. The Dayton Art InstitutePart of the 2015 Ohio Art Education Association Conference was a field trip to the Dayton Art Institute! The Shelby Art department got to see a lot of beautiful works of art up close! We even got to walk on one!! If you are ever in the Dayton area it is really worth a stop! OAEA 2015It was my turn to be the student for a few days and take all kinds of different workshops! I learned about altering books, felting, clay, paper cutting from the amazing Beatrice Coron and what felt like a million other things! I even picked up some supplies for a fun new Dia De los Muertos clay project! Fifth graders are designing a home in the style of one of San Fransico's famous "painted ladies". SMS architects are working on using all kinds of polygons to create the house of their dreams! Check out the time lapse video to get a peek, be sure to follow us on Instagram for daily updates. |
